L-carnitine is an amino-acid derivative used topically in body-firming and anti-cellulite formulations. It supports beta-oxidation of fatty acids inside adipocyte mitochondria, with cosmetic claims focused on the appearance of skin smoothness and tone. Effective at 1% to 5% in body lotions and slimming gels. Pairs broadly with caffeine and other body-contour actives. No major conflicts.
Topical L-carnitine is considered acceptable during pregnancy and lactation per Mother to Baby. Carnitine is endogenous to the body; topical exposure produces negligible systemic increment over physiological levels.
