Caffeine is a methylxanthine alkaloid used topically in skincare for under-eye puffiness, dark circles, and the appearance of cellulite. It works via vasoconstriction, lipolytic phosphodiesterase inhibition, and antioxidant scavenging of reactive oxygen species. Effective at 1% to 5% in cosmetic formulations. Pairs freely with most actives. No major conflicts.
Topical caffeine produces negligible systemic exposure compared to dietary intake. Mother to Baby and Bozzo (2011) flag topical cosmetic caffeine as acceptable during pregnancy and lactation.
Stimulant that supports local microcirculation where it is applied. In body and eye-area formulas it helps de-puff and firm the look of skin, for a smoother, more toned and visibly refreshed appearance.
